Portraits of Ephemera
Winter 2020
Photography, Appropriation
This project challenges the line between portraiture and still life photography. By bringing various forms of ephemera into the studio I am able to personify and portray their emotions.
Since studio photography is a more involved process of controlling light, we typically choose subjects that we consider valuable. In contrast, I selected subjects that are often overlooked and challenged our perception by presenting ephemera in a new perspective.
These portraits of a bicycle tire tube and paper towel tubes are the darkest in this collection. Although they play a crucial role in supporting the structure of the bicycle wheel or paper towel, we only recognize their existence when we replace or discard them.
